Lessons From the Outer Limits: The god of this Age has blinded the Minds of Unbelievers (2 Corinthians 4:4)  – Part #12

By Richard Allen – September 7, 2026

As I alluded to, in the previous Blog of this Series, “Lessons From the Outer Limits: John the Baptist Reveals the One” – Part #11, the Matrix movie is an actual theatrical version of Plato’s “The Cave,” which was part of his Republic. The big reveal for Thomas Anderson – a.k.a. ‘Neo’ – is that the world he thinks is real, is in fact a ‘projection’ by the ‘machines’ who warred with mankind, and mankind lost. One of the most fascinating characters in the Matrix is the ‘Judas Character,’ a man named ‘Cyper.’ As we have learned in an earlier Blog, Neo came to an understanding of the ‘Matrix,’ seeing that all of life is ‘an illusion’ – a ‘false or distorted projection’ of the world. In a similar fashion, believers who come in faith to embrace the Gospel of Jesus Christ, also come to believe that the ‘world around us’ is a ‘distortion,’ caused by the Fall of Man and Satan’s lie. In Matrix terminology, coming to understand this, is to be ‘Red-Pilled.’ Neo was given a ‘choice’ to either take the ‘Blue Pill’ – allowing him to return to his life, still deluded by the ‘false projection’ of the Matrix – or, to take the ‘Red Pill’ and disconnect his mind from ‘The Matrix,’ giving him Freedom. Neo chose ‘Freedom’ as did ‘Cypher.’

But Cypher didn’t like ‘reality’ once he found out how dark, steril and barren the actual world was. He wanted to be put back into ‘The Matrix,’ and be provided with wealth and pleasure – even if it was a ‘temorary illusion.’ Cypher liked the fallen world of pleasure and sin – more than suffering as a ‘Rebel’ and knowing the ‘Truth.’ It’s the same today with many who initially come to Christ. Here’s a brief synopsis that I found on YouTube in a piece entitled: “Plato’s Cave and the Matrix in 2 Minutes:”

“Plato‘s allegory of the Cave. In discussing the effects of ignorance and knowledge, Plato asks Socrates to describe a group of people who have been chained to a wall in a deep Cave their whole lives. All these people can see are the shadows projected on the walls in front of them, created by artists working above and behind the prisoners. The chained people give names to the shadows. If they see the shadow of a flower, they think it’s a real flower. They cannot move their heads and therefore see themselves as shadows, perhaps most profound of all, they are not even aware that they are imprisoned. For them, the shadows are reality.  One man escapes the chain and gets outside. He is blinded by the sunlight as he realizes that the shadows he had watched his whole life are only illusions.  Everything he ever believed was a lie, and the true reality he now witnesses is infinitely more amazing and beautiful. He returns to the Cave to share what he has learned.  His eyes have trouble readjusting to the darkness. He tells his fellow slaves of the new truth the new reality that he has just witnessed!  The prisoners, watch him and listen. They assume he has gone mad.  If he tries to take the others out of the Cave by force they will most likely kill him.  Most do not have the philosophical fortitude to get out of this metaphorical Cave, even if they wanted to.  Plato said those who were able to see beyond the shadows and lies of their culture will never be understood, let alone believed by the masses. The matrix is Plato‘s Cave told on a Grand scale.  The word matrix means mathematical structure, and the Latin root of matrix is womb. The root meaning of womb is, Cave. The matrix is the Cave, and the womb powered by the dreams of humans, sleeping in machine-built vats of liquid resembling wombs.” [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEK7JxsouTs]

This should really hit home for Believers in Jesus Christ. The world we live in – is a ‘distortion’ of God’s  original design and intent for creation. The Apostle Paul made clear to the Church at Corinth, that the present form of this world is temporary:

“Those who make use of this world should be like people who aren’t preoccupied with it, because this world in its present form is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:31).

But what really strikes home is Plato’s narrative of the man, newly freed from the deception he lived inside the Cave – trying to go back to warn others in the Cave. They still sit in darkness, only seeing shadows, yet when he tries to convince them of the real world outside – they think ‘he’s gone mad.’ And if he were to try and take them outside the Cave by force, they would likely kill him. This is the phenomenon that the Matrix taps into – continually showing us the ‘masses of humanity’ still trapped in ‘The Matrix,’ but unable to see their imprisonment, and are totally resistant to being set free! Any Christian who has ever witnessed to an unbeliever knows the stress of trying to explain to those trapped in lies and deception – that by ‘embracing Jesus Christ by Faith, they can be set free from this fallen world!’  The question we have to ask is: ‘Why are fallen sinners, trapped in a Cave of Sin and Death, unwilling to even consider their condition?’

First, the easy answer is: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers so they can’t see the light of the Gospel of the Glory of Christ, who is the image of God" (2 Corinthians 4:4). Paul explains, like the men in Plato’s Cave, that these men are blinded to the Truth by the Father of Lies, the Devil!

Second, living in the Cave (i.e. fallen world) has ‘Conditioned’ men and women not to believe or accept any contrary information than the ‘approved shadows they have known their entire lives.’ We moderns – now living in a ‘Post Christian World’ – shouldn’t be amazed that men intellectually ‘just can’t believe in a God they cannot see, hear or touch." Like Plato’s Cave, those living inside the projected AI REALITY of ‘The Matrix’ cannot imagine any world outside the ‘shadows and images’ that the Devil allows them to see. The only way to be released from ‘The Matrix’ (i.e. Cave) – and this life-long ‘Conditioning’ in our fallen world, is to be brought from Death into Life by being Born Again! As I have explained at great length in a Blog series several years ago: “The Parable of the Soils,” even when the Truth (i.e. Seed) is liberally scattered across the ‘soils of men’s hearts,’ only that Soil which has been prepared by the Sower can receive the Seed of the Word. In ‘The Matrix,’ Thomas Anderson may always have had the feeling that something just didn’t add up in the world as he knew it. He was clearly being ‘drawn’ by forces within and outside himself. But it wasn’t until Neo was given a choice: ‘Take the Red Pill,’ that he had his eyes fully opened. The result was, he was removed from ‘The Matrix.’ He literally had to be ‘born by the Word of Truth’ (1 Peter 1:23), and his physical body released from the ‘womb-like’ enclosure where he had spent his entire life!  The analogy isn’t a perfect match, but it shows again “the effects of the Law – even in our blindness – give us a consciousness of sin” (Romans 2:15).

Third, Thomas Anderson, a.k.a. ‘Neo’ needed to have emissaries from the ‘real world’ – come back and proclaim to him ‘Knowledge of the Truth!’ This is when a ‘rag-tag group’ of Rebels from Morpheus’ team came to tell him the truth and work to bring him out of the Cave. Instrumental in this work is a woman named ‘Trinity’ (Carrie-Anne Moss). How ironic, the use of Biblical names and terms employed in this Sci-Fi Classic. For each of us to believe, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit (i.e. The Trinity) are intricately involved in our Salvation! Let me once again state that neither ‘The Matrix’ movie, nor Plato’s story of the Cave, present the Gospel or Biblical Truth accurately. They do show once again that even in our unbelief, fallen men often stumble on spiritual truths. We’re all looking for a Savior to bring our captivity in ‘The Matrix’ to an end, and give us real purpose and direction in life. As fallen sinners we are unwilling and unable to ‘see the kingdom of God’ (John 3:3), and need the power and agency of the Triune God to come to faith and escape captivity from this fallen world – ‘The Real Matrix.’

In closing, let me make a final observation that ‘The Matrix.’ clearly reveals: The repetitive maze of life ‘under the sun,’ shows that our existence – separated from God and His purpose – is ‘meaningless striving after the wind’ (Ecclesiastes 1:14). Thomas Anderson (Neo) is aware there is something more to existence. In his current position he is discontented, looking for answers to life amid the busy rat-race of modern existence. He has a decent job, and enjoys a comfortable existence – yet, he is not content – knowing there is something more. Like the man in Plato’s Cave who awakened and escaped, Neo is looking for the ‘Herald, Morpheus’ who can lead him to Zion, the City of God. He’s willing to ‘take the Red Pill’ and risk everything – to see the ‘fallen world as it is.’ But most people still in ‘The Matrix,’ like Cypher, are happy to be ‘deceived and sastisfied’ with the things of this life, and long for nothing more. Most of mankind whom Neo passes on the street while walking in ‘The Matrix’ – are oblivious to anything deeper. Sadly, just having a ‘plate and a mate’ satisfies most people in this life. Jesus warned a group of His followers who were both amazed and filled with the fishes and loaves of bread that He used to feed them:

“Jesus answered them, ‘Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal’ ” (John 6:26-27).

The underlying story of ‘The Matrix’ is, that God has awakened some to His presence and purpose. But most fallen men and women are left to pursue ‘the lusts of the flesh, the lusts of the eyes and the boastful pride of life’ (1 John 2:16). God be merciful to us poor sinners, sitting in a darkened Cave, looking at the shadows on the Cave’s wall – desiring something more. To those who have been awakened by God’s Spirit, longing to be released from our ‘Captivity’ into God’s marvelous light, call out to God in the name of His Son, Jesus to shine on you.  Let us leave ‘The Matrix,’ and ‘flee the Cave’ pursuing Jesus our Savior!

“But unto you who revere and worshipfully fear My name shall the Sun of Righteousness arise with healing in His wings and His beams, and you shall go forth and like calves released from the stall, frolicking for joy!” (Malachi 4:2).

Soli Deo Gloria!
